I have always had a passion for nutrition, fitness, and health in general (thanks Mom). I thought I was fit until I found CrossFit in 2006. My very first experience at a CrossFit facility was life-changing. The workout was Helen, my time was slow, and the weight for the kettle bell was scaled. It was a very humbling experience overall, but I instantly fell in love with the program. Ever since then, my affinity for CrossFit has grown exponentially.

My close friends will tell you I have a history of not being able to stick with anything. I’ve gotten into martial arts, skateboarding, marathon running, and plenty more. I always got bored and moved on to something else; something more exciting at the time. Until I found CrossFit. You can never get bored with constantly varied functional movements. In doing CrossFit, I found that I had a passion for coaching and helping others reach their goals.

I grew up playing competitive team sports my entire life and liked to consider myself a very fit person. After college, I found myself serving in the U.S. Navy on fast-attack submarines. Four very sedentary years later, I was unhappy with where my fitness levels had declined to but was lucky to receive orders to serve with a SEAL team in Hawaii for two years. To say my time with the SEAL’s was life-changing would be an understatement. I discovered CrossFit, the benfits of proper nutrition and the advantages of working out in a team environment. CrossFit is a program like no other I have ever tried, and I truly believe that anyone can reap the benefits of the program. I hope that CrossFit Deep Ellum can expose more people to the benefits of the CrossFit program.

I have been an athlete my entire life and found CrossFit four years ago. I have trained down many fitness avenues and CrossFit, to say the least, is the superior fitness program to any and all fitness goals. Coaching is a life passion, inside the gym and out. I love to help people and seeing people overcome obstacles brings me much joy, and if I can help someone reach any goal, there is nothing more satisfying. I truly believe that CrossFit changes lives. It is not just some place to go and sweat. I can do that standing outside in Dallas on a summer day. CrossFit, on a large scale, and CrossFit Deep Ellum, on a smaller one, is a community, a brotherhood; and if done right, betters one’s body, mind, and soul. We can’t cheat the clock, and there is nothing more gratifying than putting in an honest day’s work of blood, sweat, and sometime tears.

Until July of 2008, competitive swimming was all I had ever known. I had just completed a 15 year swimming career that led me to the United States Nationals, NCAA Division 1 Championships, and eventually the 2008 Olympic Trials, and I was in search of something to fill both the competitive and athletic void in my life. I still remember my first Crossfit workouts vividly and to say they were agonizing would be an understatement. Ever since that first day at the gym, I have been on a journey of self improvement that has changed the way I work out, the way I eat, and has profoundly affected all aspects of my life. I have met some amazing people on this journey, and I feel lucky to be in the business of helping people better their lives. Crossfit Deep Ellum has given me the ability to share in the lives of many people I otherwise would have never met, and I get a great sense of satisfaction knowing that I have helped people to achieve their goals and to be their best.

Exercise, athletics, and competition have been a constant in my life since I could walk. I picked up Olympic Weightlifting in high school as a compliment to football and wrestling. Soon thereafter, football and wrestling became compliments to my weightlifting. From that platform I have competed in National competitions around the United States including the Junior National Championships and the American Open. I began coaching the sport in college and have since fallen in love with seeing others do and complete things they never saw possible. As a junior in college, I walked into my first experience with Crossfit and to say I was unprepared is a massive understatement. I realized my weightlifting background could push the weights but my lungs and mind could not keep up. I was hooked then and still am today and I count myself lucky to wake up everyday getting to coach, encourage, and help others in meeting their goals.
