Make It Worth Your While

“Cindy”

As many rounds as possible in 20 minutes:
5 Pullups
10 Pushups
15 Air Squats

Coaches Notes

Time for another reminder about shorting reps and reducing the effectiveness of the workout. It is very easy to get sloppy on reps during workouts that are primarily body weight movements. The allure of an extra round is not worth it. Focus on every rep. Remember, it’s form first, then consistency, and finally intensity. Most of us want to skip to intensity right away.

  1. Just a Reminder that Tomorrow marks the start of the First Endurance cycle! Classes are Tuesday/Thursday/Friday at 6:30AM and Tuesday/Thursday at 6:30PM. Email me with any questions. If you are starting the program you MUST attend a class on Tuesday. (that’s tomorrow)

Bring a jump rope if you own one, if not we will fit you for one to order from http://store.rxjumpropes.com/

  2. I’d like to submit a topic for blog banter today: Protein supplements. For those who eat 100% paleo and are extremely active (crossfit, running, biking, etc), are protein shakes encouraged? If so, what types/brands? I find myself eating nothing but fruits for breakfast and feel like drinking a protein shake would be a quick, easy way to get the protein I need without having to cook.

    • I have been drinking a protein shake for breakfast for almost a year. I started last june when a group of us started a paleo challenge. I find its quick and easy and has really paid off! I use ___ protein (Drew fill in the blank) aka whatever he buys in bulk! I have 2 go to recipes: pumpkin pie shake (water, ice, frozen banana, canned pumpkin, fresh spinach, pumpkin pie spice) and berry (water, ice, frozen berries, fro banana, spinach, greens plus, cinnamon, protein) YUM!

      • The Pumpkin pie shake is amazing! I make it at least once a week. I add a little bit of honey and cinnamon as well. Chocolate or vanilla protein works.. Or both.

    • While a protein shake isn’t “exactly” paleo, your best bet is probably a 100% Whey protein. If you can, just buy the pure stuff and be careful to read the labels. A lot of manufactures add in sweeteners, artificial or natural.

While Whey is technically dairy, it doesn’t have lactose or Casein protein, which are the two parts of dairy that give us humanoids the most issues.

People who are actually smart – feel free to correct my ass.

    • As Mark said, protein supplements wouldn’t qualify as paleo. If you are currently 100% paleo then a protein supplement would be a downgrade for you. If you are below 100%, you’d be fine adding it in, especially if the alternative is no protein at all.
Are you completely against cooking? What about cooking in large quantities so that you have meat available for breakfast? Eggs?

      • I’m all for cooking. However, sometimes I just don’t have the time. I could scramble up some eggs for breakfast each morning, but I’ve been told I must watch my egg consumption and limit myself to no more than 6 per week (paleo recommendation). I’d rather eat eggs every morning versus eating a protein shake, but if I need to limit the eggs, what brand of protein do you recommend?

      • I cook a huge batch of scrambled eggs bacon and sausage once a week. Add some chopped veggies and some coconut milk and u have a fast breakfast and snack in the fridge. I use about three dozen eggs a pound of bacon and 1/2 pound sausage. Don’t strain the bacon fat.

I prefer to be as close to 100% Paleo as I can.

      • Drew, I’m sure I can get past that picture. That is not what I would call a successful marketing strategy….

      • I warned you! It’s damn good protein though

      • Thanks Drew. I went ahead and ordered 5 lbs. During checkout, it was required that I enter a referral source. I put your name down, along with your phone number, so the guy on the front of the website should be giving you a call soon. Good luck.

    • i’ve been using syntha 6 for a while, but just ran the numbers and at 22g per serving (52 servings per tub), each 5.04lb tub has 1,144g of protein. On amazon, with free shipping, syntha 6 is $47, so each gram of protein is $0.041 or $2.05/50g serving. This bag (http://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-Protein-Isolate-10-Pound/dp/B000MAK59O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337023570&sr=8-1#productPromotions) is straight up pure whey protein. 10lbs for 100 bucks free 2 day shipping with prime. 4,535.92 grams or $0.022 per gram. 50g serving is $1.10. granted it’s unflavored, but it’s 100% pure whey protein.

      • I use a 100% pure Whey protein, no flavor, no additives. It’s really bland and dry if you just mix it with water. I mix mine with some almond butter, fruit, and ice. Adds plenty of flavor and sweetness and keeps it from being chalky.

    • Jake and Drew: damn that was gonna be my next tat!

OMG, I just about fell out of my chair when I saw the guy you’re talking about! Wow.

  3. Well I consider making it to a Monday morning class a PR for me today. I only got 10 rounds + 2 pullups, but I was happy I did all the pullups Rx and did (limited ROM) from the toes pushups.

  4. This website allows you to select what ingredients you want in your protein powder and has a huge variety of options. I haven’t purchased anything from here nor did I do a cost analysis, but the prices seem pretty good.
